MeshLab is a Windows open source software for processing and editing 3D triangular grids. Provides a set of tools for editing, cleaning, treating, checking, rendering, texturing, and converting networks. It offers functions for processing raw data produced using 3D digitization tools / devices and for preparing models for 3D printing.

Input / output in many formats:

  • Imports: PLI, STL, OFF, OBJ, 3DS, COLLADA, PTKS
  • Export: PLI, STL, OFF, OBJ, 3DS, COLLADA, VRML, DKSF

Features and accents

Alignment
The 3D data reconciliation phase (also known as registration) is a basic step in the process of processing 3D scanned data. It provides a powerful tool for moving different networks into a common reference system, capable of managing a large set of range maps. MeshLab implements a fine-tuned ICP one-to-one alignment step, followed by a global package setup error distribution step. Alignment can be performed on grids and point clouds coming from several sources, including active (both short and long range) scanners and 3D imaging tools.

Visualization and presentation
Application visualization features (including decorators and seiders) can help graphically represent the special features of 3D models. It is possible to control the perspective / orthographic display parameters of the camera and use predefined canonical views. The app also offers a high resolution screenshot feature, extremely useful in creating graphic documentation of the survey.

Reconstruction
The process of transforming independent acquisitions, or point clouds, into a triangulated single-surface network can be met by different algorithmic approaches. It provides several solutions for the reconstruction of the shape of an object, ranging from volumetric (Marching Cube) to implicit surfaces (Screened Poisson).

Color processing
It can manipulate the colors of the scalp and face using string Photoshop-as filters (gamma, saturation, brightness, contrast, levels, smoothing, sharpening). Automatic filters are available to calculate ambient occlusion and volumetric obscuration and mapping to the color of the scalp or face.

Color mapping and texturing
Color information can be as important as geometry, but several acquisition technologies do not provide accurate appearance data. MeshLab contains a pipeline for aligning and projecting color information (from a set of uncalibrated images) onto a 3D model. Several automatic and assisted methods for obtaining high-quality color coding are provided, with vertex or texture mapping.

Move, sink, close
In addition to being able to export to STL (one of the most common formats for 3D printing), it can be used to prepare 3D models for printing by creating inner shells, re-sampling / remixing 3D models to facilitate cutting, closing small holes to make waterproof mesh and leveling the lower part for better grip on the platform.

3D model cleaning
The application offers a range of automatic, semi-manual and interactive filters to remove those geometric elements that most software and algorithms consider “wrong”. It is possible to remove topological errors, duplicated and non-referenced vertices, small components, degenerate or intersected faces and many other geometric and topological singularities. Using a variety of automatic and interactive selection methods, you can isolate and remove unwanted areas of your networks and point clouds.

Model comparison
Measuring the geometric difference between two 3D models using the Hausdorf distance is a common approach in grid processing. Many years ago (1997!), The Laboratory for Visual Computing developed and freely distributed what has become a standard tool for such a task, Metro; related work has been cited more than a thousand times.

Scaling, positioning and orientation
3D models, especially those derived from surveys and scans, often need to be reoriented or housed in a specific reference system; in addition, if they are generated from 3D photos, they generally need scaling to become metric. The Mesh Lab application provides a range of functions for manipulating the scale, positioning and orientation of 3D models, including basic transformation operations such as translation / scaling / rotation, automatic re-centering and axis alignment, georeferencing with reference points, interactive rotation / translation / scaling manipulators and many others.

Conversion and exchange of 3D models
It can import and export multiple different 3D data formats to online services such as SketchFab. In this way, it is possible for the user to exchange data with other tools (including BlenderPhotoscan, VisualSfM, Cloud Compare, Autodesk tools), working in the context of complex 3D processing processes in a range of different contexts and applications. Scripting functionality will make this type of use even easier and unattended.

Simplification, purification and modification
A common need when processing a 3D model is to reduce its geometric complexity, creating a geometry of the same shape, but with fewer triangles (or points). The program offers various ways to simplify (decimate) triangulated surfaces, capable of preserving geometric details and texture mapping, or selectively reducing the number of points in a point cloud. In other cases, the user may want to increase the number of triangles (or points): It also provides different division schemes, reshaping, and resampling filters to increase the geometric complexity of 3D models or to optimize point distribution and triangulation quality.

Integration with images
Raster layers have been introduced in MeshLab to allow us to transcend the standard 3D model. Users of the application can import images and other 2D entities into the project. These raster layers can be used not only to project color information on a 3D model, but also to generate specific viewpoints, or to store the entire 3D-from-image acquisition procedure by including images used to generate final results.

Measurement and analysis
Interactive point-to-point measurement of 3D models is really easy in the application. Moreover, automatic filters will return different geometric and topological information about your 3D model (or just the selected area), while the Sectioning tool can report intersected parts of the network as polylines. Different geometric information (such as curvature, geodetic distance or local peak density) can be calculated on grids and 3D models using automatic filters.
