Luis Suarez Begins Recovery After Serious Knee Injury as Barcelona Consider January Stopgap

Barcelona striker Luis Suárez has taken the first step on his road to recovery from a long-term knee injury, something which has prompted the club to consider signing a new forward during the January transfer window.

The Uruguay international hasn’t featured for Barcelona since their defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Supercopa de España earlier this month.

Suárez could be ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his right knee, but Barcelona have already given their fans an update on his recovery by confirming he’s already in post-op treatment with the club.

The 32-year-old is currently Barcelona’s fourth top goalscorer of all time with 191 across all competitions, sitting just behind László Kubala (194) in the club’s history books.

Suárez still has some to to go if he wants to overtake César Rodríguez (232), let alone Lionel Messi (618), but his absence over the next few months is something which has sent the club’s key decision-makers into panic.

It’s not bee decided if they’ll make a move for a new striker – Antoine Griezmann could still be used through the middle by new boss Quique Setién – but a handful of players have already been linked with a move to the Camp Nou.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang apparently tops their list of transfer targets and Barcelona are believed to want to sign the Arsenal star on a short-term loan, but the deal has unsurprisingly not had any traction from the Premier League side’s point of view.

Elsewhere, Valencia star Rodrigo is the latest player to be linked with joining Barcelona in a €50m deal – significantly more than what the club want to pay on a new striker this month.

It’s for the same reason that Lautaro Martínez is unlikely to move from Inter in January, while Barcelona now believe they might be able to sign RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner for just €30m.
