Molly is the robust version of Signal for Android, the simple yet secure messaging app of the Signal Foundation.

Back in 2018, Signal allowed the user to set a passphrase to protect the local messaging database. But this option was removed with the introduction of file-based encryption in Android. Molly brings it back with more safety features.

Molly connects to a Signal server, so you can chat with Signal contacts seamlessly. Please remember to review the Signal Terms and Privacy Policy before registering.

We update Molly every two weeks to include the latest features and bug fixes in Signal. The exception is security issues, which are quickly eliminated when a fix is ​​available.

Molly has different features compared to Signal:

• Data encryption is at rest – Secure the database with passphrase encryption
• Protect the RAM wiper – Securely separate sensitive data from device memory
• Automatic lock – Lock the app automatically under certain conditions
• Support for multiple devices — Link multiple devices, including Android tablets, to one account
• Block unknown contacts – Block messages and calls from unknown senders for security and anti-spam
• Deleting a contact – Allows you to delete contacts and stop sharing your profile
• Disappearing call history – Clear call notifications and expiring messages
• Debug logs are optional – Android login can be disabled
• Custom backup – Choose between a daily or weekly interval and the number of backups to keep
• SOCKS is a proxy and Tor support – Tunnel application network traffic through proxy and Orbot

With the UnifiedPush version of Molly, the following features are also available:

• UnifiedPush support: Receive push notifications via the UnifiedPush protocol

Apart from that, you will get all the features of Signal and some minor fixes and improvements. As a signal, SMS is not supported.

Molly is open source like Signal. But Signal uses Google’s proprietary software to provide some key features.

To support a free and 100% readable application, Molly comes in two versions: one with proprietary blobs like Signal and one without. They are called Molly and Molly-FOSS, respectively. You can install your favorite flavor at any time, and it will replace any previously installed version. Data and settings will be saved so you don’t have to register again.

Molly-UP is a separate application based on Molly-FOSS. It includes the ability to receive notifications through the UnifiedPush provider.

If Molly-UP is set as a second connected device, UnifiedPush notifications will not be available.

This table shows the current state of the dependencies:

Molly and Signal apps can be installed on the same device. If you need a second number to chat, you can use Molly and Signal.

However, you cannot use the same phone number in both apps at the same time. Only the last registered app will remain active, and the rest will go offline. Remember that you are not limited to using only your main phone number – you can use any number from which you can receive SMS or calls when registering.

Backups are fully compatible. Signal backups can be restored to Molly, and vice versa, by selecting the backup folder and file. However, to import a backup to Signal you must be using the same or newer version of Molly.

With older releases of Android, you may need to rename the backup file and copy it to the expected path, so that the app has a backup to restore during installation. These are the locations within the internal storage where backups are automatically written:

• Molly/Backups/Molly-year-month-date-time.backup

Molly supports reproducible builds, so anyone can run the build process to reproduce the same APK as the original release.
