Check if the CPU speed of your MacBook is limited due to insufficient heat dissipation, and monitor the processor temperature from the menu bar

New features of Hot 1.3.0:

  • Support M1 CPU (Apple Silicon).
  • Added a menu to display available CPU temperature sensors.
  • Added the option to hide the icon in the menu bar.
  • Better refresh when changing preferences.

In recent years, MacBook has been plagued by thermal throttling issues. Apple is trying to squeeze the last bit of performance from Intel-powered laptops while minimizing noise, which will only lead to overheating.

The company’s internal processor Apple Silicon is expected to solve these problems, but they will not appear for a while. Until then, applications that can monitor CPU throttling under load may be very useful.

Menu bar CPU speed limit monitor

hot Not a classic CPU monitor, because it will not track your processor speed. Instead, it checks whether the processing power of the chip is limited by the operating system to avoid damage to the device due to the temperature exceeding its safety threshold.

Throttling is common in recent MacBooks, usually when running intensive processes for long periods of time. Although laptop cooling can handle high loads for a short period of time, continuous loads usually cause throttling.

Can also be used as an inconspicuous temperature monitor

The menu bar icon of the application can display the current speed limit of the CPU, or display the speed limit and the temperature of the processor at the same time. If the limit is below 60%, the application can color the menu bar text for additional visibility.

If your particular device usually does not have a hot throttle, then heat will not be of much use because the current speed limit cannot be hidden from the menu bar. If this option is available, the app can also be used as a minimalist temperature monitor.

Very helpful for Intel-powered MacBook

Before Apple introduces ARM-based CPUs, we will have to deal with the limitations of Intel’s rather outdated architecture. If you feel that your MacBook becomes a bit sluggish during continuous load, but you are not sure, Hot can provide a clear answer and help you monitor the CPU temperature.
