A group of 13 US attorneys general asked Amazon on Tuesday to provide data on coronavirus deaths and infections among its staff, as well as evidence of the company's compliance with paid sick leave laws .
In a letter, officials asked for a statewide breakdown of the number of Amazon workers, including those at Whole Foods, who were infected or died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
The letter, headed by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, has been joined by states such as Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.
The same group of attorneys general wrote to the company in March asking it to improve its paid vacation policy.
On Tuesday, they asked for assurances that Amazon would not respond to workers raising health and safety concerns from management, the media, colleagues, or relevant government agencies.
In a statement, Amazon said it was committed to ensuring a safe workplace and has implemented more than 150 changes, including the distribution of face masks to warehouse workers.
"We will continue to invest in security, payment and benefits for our teams who play an invaluable role in delivering items to communities around the world," said a spokesperson for Amazon. told me Tuesday.
In the past few weeks, Amazon has laid off at least four workers for voicing concerns about workplace safety. The company previously said the workers were fired for violating the company's internal protocol.
