Download Free Claquette 3.0.1 (Mac) – Download
There are usually free or open-source alternatives for any paid app, but they most often aren’t as intuitive, which can make a huge difference for users who aren’t particularly experienced with a certain process.
Claquette is a great example of why a paid app can be a better choice. On the face of it, it’s a fairly simple application, offering screen, camera, and voice recording. The selling point is that it makes recording and exporting content incredibly straightforward, and it also lets you trim and crop your GIFs or videos in a couple of very simple steps.
Easy screen and camera capture
To start recording, simply click the capture button in the main window or use the default global hotkey (⇧⌘2). The app can only capture the entire desktop, but you can trim the video later if you need to. Still, the option to select an area or window to capture would have been nice.
You can also choose to record video from a capture device or audio from a microphone. If you wish, the recorded audio track can be removed from the video before it is exported.
Some helpful and intuitive editing tools
Once you’ve stopped recording, you will be able to preview the captured content before exporting it to a video or GIF animation. Before that, however, you have the option to hide the cursor, show or hide the video track, and enable or disable the audio track.
Moreover, you can trim unnecessary sections from your video and crop it. These two features are remarkably fast and easy to use, so much so that even the most inexperienced of users will have no problems with them.
Create videos or GIFs and export to Final Cut Pro or Motion
The export options are relatively straightforward, but it is worth mentioning that you can customize the presets quite a bit, so you aren’t locked into limited profiles. If you buy the Pro edition, you can even export projects directly to Final Cut Pro X or Motion 5.
Overall, Claquette is a good choice for beginners or those who want a very straightforward capture process at their disposal. It does lack the option to record a specific area or window, and it isn’t the cheapest option around, but it may be worth it thanks to its intuitive design alone.
