Not everyone likes the official Dropbox app. Many felt it was too bloated, providing unnecessary functionality in a package that seemed to be getting bigger and bigger.

Grandmaster is a more lightweight alternative that some users may prefer. It retains the core functionality of the service, but removes non-essential functionality to minimize package size and memory usage. What’s more, it also comes with a command line tool.

Sync your files and that’s it

Maestral uses the public Dropbox API, which makes most of the service’s functionality available. However, unlike the official client, it cannot transfer only the changed parts of the file, so bandwidth usage may be higher.

Additionally, the app lacks support for Dropbox Paper, Dropbox Teams, and shared folder settings management. However, if you’re after a smaller, simpler client, you might not need these features.

miraculously effective

If anything, Maestral is even easier to set up than the official Dropbox app. All you need to do is log into your account and provide an authorization token. A new sync directory will be created and you will be able to choose which items should be synced.

After the initial setup, everything should be pretty straightforward. Just copy the files to the Maestral folder to sync them to the cloud, then select the items you want to use locally. You can also view recent changes and disable notifications or pause syncing entirely.

Other advantages

If you’re using the Basic Dropbox service, you’re usually limited to three devices. However, since Maestral is not considered a Dropbox app, you can use it on an unlimited number of devices.

For advanced users, command-line tools are also available, which allow more advanced functionality such as configuring multiple accounts, comparing file revisions, or restoring previous versions of files.

While obviously not as advanced as the official app, Maestral is a great option for users who want something more lightweight or who don’t like the official client for other reasons.
