Music creation has come a long way since computers began to permeate most fields of activity, but that’s not a bad thing. Sounds used to be recorded and processed with multiple devices, but can now be done from a single dashboard. E.g, Mount Allows you to simulate what is possible with the Roland MT-32 MIDI synth.

Configure MIDI input and output

The application comes with several components that allow you to capture sounds from a MIDI device or any other source, or just play existing sounds to determine if they need to be processed. However, for normal operations to succeed, you need to load existing data under a file such as BIN or ROM, and have it handled by a specialized manager.

The first configuration is for input and output. As mentioned above, the input can come from an external file, or with an option to start recording and end with a MIDI file saved to a PC. The output is anything that can process and export sound, even a virtual driver like ASIO. Depending on your needs, the output can be configured with options such as sample rate, SRC quality, block length, audio delay, and whether to use ring buffer rendering.

Built-in player and synthesizer with various tweaks

The MIDI player component is very basic, but sufficient for almost any need. Adding can be done by dragging a folder onto the appropriate playlist, and control options allow you to start playback, snoop on content or set the speed for better analysis. The list can also be saved for later use.

Last but not least, the compositor component only takes up a fraction of the space in the main window. However, it comes with a nice properties panel for configuring MIDI delay mode, DAC emulation, whether reverb is enabled and how to handle it, analog output selection, gain and channel count. Once done, you can easily convert the MIDI file to WAV for better integration into other audio processors.

In summary

All in all, Munt is a useful little application designed to make your work easier when grabbing and processing MIDI input. This may take some getting used to, and the compositor value cannot be updated during playback. However, the input support provides a fair amount of flexibility, so overall it’s worth checking out, Portable version

Just in case it makes you like it.
