Password managers are very important these days. There are plenty of options out there, but if you want a cross-platform solution to sync your data between devices, you’ll usually have to pay. Usually, but not always.

Bit Warden is an open source project that aims to provide free password management for all desktop and mobile platforms and browsers. It’s not as feature-rich as some paid competitors, and the UI is a bit dated, but you can use it for free on all devices.

Simple to use macOS app

The desktop application is very simple. The UI consists of three panels: one for folders, one for projects, and one for displaying project information. You can organize passwords, cards, and notes into folders, search for content, and edit information in the right panel.

Bitwarden comes with a password generator and you can create shareable links with expiration dates. Your vault can be configured to automatically lock after a certain amount of time, and apps can be minimized to the menu bar for better access.

Extensions for Safari and other major browsers

The App Store version comes with a built-in Safari extension, which is the only way to get add-ons. If you install Bitwarden from GitHub, you will only be able to use it in Chrome or Firefox. It’s also worth noting that some Monterey users have reported issues with Safari extensions not showing up after installing from the App Store.

As far as the functionality of the plugin goes, it offers pretty much everything you’d get in a desktop app, including autofill for password fields. However, the UI is a bit crowded and looks outdated in Safari.

Free desktop app and cross-platform sync

While a premium plan is available, it’s not required by any means. It just provides some optional features that the vast majority of users don’t need. When you consider Bitwarden is available for all major platforms and you can use it for free on any number of devices, it’s hard not to recommend it.

Bitwarden is a great option for users who want to start using more secure passwords. It has all the features most users need, runs on any device, and the fact that it’s open source should give you peace of mind about what to do with your data.
