Photo colorization is certainly not new technology, as the technology has been around since the early 20th century, but the advent of colorization algorithms has made it accessible to even ordinary people like you and me. While the engine is far from perfect, you can usually get great results with little to no effort.

By now, there are countless shaders on the web, in all forms, from simple web apps to Reddit bots. Not all are created equal, and the results are sometimes hilarious, but technology is constantly evolving.

Of course, nothing comes close to coloring by hand, but it takes a lot of time and skill, which many of us don’t have.

Pretty good, but definitely not perfect

We tested the app with a few photos of ourselves to try to simulate the experience of an actual user. We found that images with relatively little detail were handled well, but those with complex patterns gave the engine some trouble.

You can make some simple image adjustments, such as changing contrast, brightness, shadows, and highlights, before saving the file. These properties also affect the end result, so play around with it a bit.

Thankfully, the app does give you the option to make some corrections to color pictures. Just click on the image to add some indication and change the proportions of blue, green, red and yellow. Alternatively, you can choose a color from elsewhere in the image.

PhotosRevive is a cool app, even if you have no interest in colorizing photos, because it’s very interesting to see how algorithms usually automatically add the correct colors to black and white pictures. Sometimes it goes wrong, but it’s definitely worth a try.
