Activity Monitor can show each process’s current resource usage and total CPU usage over time, but it lacks the combination of the two — a graph of each individual app’s activity over a specific time period.

The application monitors the CPU, memory and network usage of all running processes, and the 20 most active processes are listed in the UI, which can be brought up by clicking the menu bar icon. Displays the last sixty seconds of data, which should be enough to spot any unusual activity.

To switch between CPU, memory and network information, just click the arrows in the upper right corner of the window. You can disable network statistics if you like, which makes it easier to iterate through the CPU and memory readings.

Helps spot resource-hogging processes

Activity Monitor is usually all you need, but if your Mac suddenly starts freezing, any unusual CPU usage may return to normal when you launch the utility, and individual process resource consumption will not be recorded.

Vitals lets you discover such behavior with just one click in the menu bar, and even if you don’t capture it in real time, you can visualize up to 60 seconds of usage peak recording.

The app works well and comes in a very small package. The user interface itself is equally minimal, with no configuration options other than enabling or disabling network statistics. If you need to track down a misbehaving process, it should be the right tool for the job.
