All Macs come with built-in microphones that can be used to record conversations, meetings, and other important events that may occur in the office. However, it’s easy to forget to actually start recording at the right time, and sometimes you have no way of knowing when something noteworthy is going to happen.

Backtrack is an interesting macOS app that functions similarly to the ShadowPlay instant replay feature familiar to many gamers. It records audio continuously, replacing old content every 15 minutes to 5 hours, and allowing you to save any important content that occurred during that interval.

The functionality of the app is very simple. When started, it starts recording up to 60 minutes of audio from the selected input device, then starts replacing the old content with the new. Basically, the last 60 minutes of the recording will always be available for saving.

The maximum recording time can be increased to a maximum of 5 hours, which should be enough for anyone, and the temporary data won’t take up too much storage space. You can also pause the recording function at any time.

Unique yo-yo-style interface and understated design

When saving a recording to a file, you first have to specify how much of the captured audio should be included. To do this, simply click on the menu bar icon and drag the cursor in any direction.

Since it only works in the menu bar, Backtrack never gets in the way. It can even be configured to start automatically at login, saving you the work of doing it manually.

Only store data locally

Naturally, you might be concerned about running an application that records audio continuously at the office. While these concerns are understandable, Backtrack doesn’t upload any content to the cloud, and lacks even analytics of any kind.

In short, this is a great app if you often find yourself missing important conversations or events that you want to record. It’s very easy to use and unobtrusive, while also taking user privacy very seriously.
