Webcam makers don’t have the best track record when it comes to creating software for their products. Their applications tend to be very resource-intensive, and they often contain functions to manage all the other peripherals, making them bloated and inefficient.

viewfinder is a Swift-based open-source application that provides an alternative to the official software. It gives you more customization options than Photo Booth and lets you preview your webcam image before starting a call or capturing anything.

Customize webcam settings from the menu bar

Assuming your camera is connected, and you’ve given the app the permissions it needs, you can go to the menu bar and click its icon. You’ll see a preview of your webcam with a bunch of settings you can use to fine-tune it.

Everything is managed automatically by default, but you can manually change shutter speed, white balance, brightness, contrast, and saturation. Your chosen settings will remain active even after closing the app.

Lightweight, simple and efficient

Unlike some other apps created by device manufacturers, Viewfinder comes in a very small package and its functionality is limited to the basic functions needed to adjust camera settings. It also only runs in the menu bar, so it doesn’t overcrowd your Dock.

It’s written in Swift so you don’t have to deal with resource-hungry Electron apps that take forever to load, stutter, and use up precious RAM and processing power.

Great tool for tweaking and previewing camera settings

Finder is easy to use, small, open source and completely free. It’s a great alternative to dedicated device apps or even Photo Booth if you have a webcam that needs fine-tuning, or if you just want to make sure everything looks good before making a Zoom call. It doesn’t get in your way, and all the settings you need are just one click away.
