The Finder gives you an easy way to browse your Mac’s file system, but it’s not necessarily the best choice for power users.
Audio is a fairly classic dual-pane file manager designed to increase your productivity while still being user-friendly. Unlike other file managers of this type, it’s relatively easy to learn and still offers a lot of useful features.
Very accessible dual pane file manager
If you’ve used other similar file managers, you’ll be familiar with the app’s layout, but that experience isn’t necessary. Everything is arranged in an intuitive way and the user interface is uncluttered.
The initial tutorial guides you through some of the app’s main features, and you can easily learn everything else. The two panes are resizable, and you can add multiple tabs to each pane, create bookmarks, view hidden files, and more, all with easily accessible buttons or hotkeys.
Simple shortcuts and quick navigation
Like most productivity-focused apps, HiFile can be controlled via keyboard shortcuts. For example, you can press the space bar to view a list of recent folders, then enter the name of a specific directory. There are many such shortcuts, and most of them are customizable.
Some hotkeys may not be familiar to Mac users, such as F2 to rename and F3 to preview an item. While these can be changed, you cannot rebind Space to trigger the preview feature, which is what Mac users are used to, as the key is bound to folder navigation and cannot be reconfigured. You also can’t use Enter to rename, which is what you normally do on macOS.
Integrated viewer, archiver and more
HiFile comes with its own viewer for image, text and binary files. However, it supports fewer file types than Apple’s Quick Look, and you don’t have the option to use this built-in macOS feature.
The built-in archiver is useful because it supports more formats and offers more customization than the archive utilities included in macOS.
The app also comes with more sophisticated filtering tools, a search function, a folder synchronizer and a duplicate finder. You can also start typing in the current folder to filter items instantly.
Overall, HiFile is a very promising file manager that allows transition from Finder. It could use more macOS-specific customization options, such as the ability to rebind Space and use Quick Look. Other than that, it’s durable, with an impressively intuitive design and a gentle learning curve.
