Tux Paint is a free, award-winning drawing app designed for kids ages 3-12 (preschool and K-6). Tux Paint is used in schools around the world to teach computer literacy. It has an easy to use interface combined with fun sound effects and an encouraging cartoon mascot named Tux that appears at the bottom of the screen to provide tips, hints and information to help kids use the app.

To get started, children are provided with a blank canvas and a variety of tools to help them get creative. Drawing tools are available on the drawing canvas and are easily accessible. The canvas is fixed size, so you don’t have to worry about “pixels” or “inches” when creating a new image. The entire program fits on a 640×480 screen and can be displayed full screen for masking. the basic “desktop” interface of a computer. (The default mode is 800×600, but it can work at larger sizes, as well as in portrait or landscape mode.)

A simple thumbnail display is used to load and save images, so knowledge of the file system structure is not required. Even filenames are not needed. The interface is interesting and useful for children. It can also be customized, and sound effects, print and exit options can be turned off. Tux Paint has extensive multilingual support, parts of Tux Paint have been translated into 129 languages.

All in all, Tux Paint is a great tool that allows preschool kids to develop their creativity. It has a simple interface that young minds can easily understand and many different drawing tools are available; from brushes and stamps to alternative color palettes. Text can be entered in a variety of fonts, and there’s an effects tool to tinker with.
