When I find something interesting or useful, I often grab a screenshot to save the information for when I need it. It’s much easier than trying to memorize it on the spot, and much easier than transcribing the text.

Screen Tips Working on the idea, but it makes things a lot simpler. You can capture something from your desktop with a simple hotkey, then keep it on top of other windows as a useful memo. It’s intuitive, streamlined and free.

Capture notes directly from your desktop

The app is accessed from the menu bar by default, but you can also set a hotkey to start capturing more easily.The suggested shortcut is ⌘⇧2which is a continuation of the default macOS screenshot hotkey, so I found it easy to get used to.

Once you find something you need to remember, just use the shortcut and select the area you want to capture. It will remain on top of any other windows on the screen as a movable, resizable image. The whole process is so smooth that it only takes a few seconds to learn.

Easy to create and use memos

Despite the included tutorial, the app is so intuitive that it’s hardly necessary. Tips can be moved freely and can be instantly removed by double-tapping. Once deleted, they cannot be restored, but this feature is planned.

Since the hits are just images, you can copy them to the clipboard and send them to an imaging application, or save them directly. If you really need to grab some text from the memo, you can use OCR to extract it.

Well-designed app with potential for improvement

Hovering over other apps is useful, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to hide them or move them to the background.

Also, while you can hide their borders, this setting cannot be made the default, so each new prompt will still have borders that need to be turned off (if that is your preference).

Thankfully, both of these features, along with annotation and markup tools, are planned for future releases.

In short, ScreenHint is almost perfect and it’s nice to see such attention to detail in a completely free app. Aside from a few missing features, it’s fun to use, and I can easily see it integrating into my workflow.
