Package Central is intended to automate this process almost completely. It can work with hot folders, allowing team members to just transfer files to a folder for them to be packaged automatically, according to certain preset parameters.

The app is meant to run on a dedicated machine in a network. One or more folders will be watched at all times, and when something is copied from any other machine, it will be processed and exported to a specified location.

You can define multiple packaging workflows, each with their own settings, making this app suitable for teams that need to handle large numbers of projects with different specifications. Each folder has its own hot folder, so designers just need to make sure files are copied to the right location.

In addition to packaging InDesign files, Package Central can also export the documents as PDF or IDML files and send email notifications based on certain triggers. These can be errors, process stages, or other events.
