OpenSC is a collection of libraries and tools for working with smart cards. It is designed to help developers integrate features into their applications that will allow users to use smart cards. It is available for all major desktop platforms.

Primarily, this project is aimed at cards that support cryptographic operations, and it is intended to allow their use in security applications. It makes use of standard APIs, such as PKCS#11 API, Smart Card Minidriver, and CryptoTokenKit.

OpenSC is provided with a simple installer. Once the installation has been completed, you can run a test to make sure everything is in order and customize the configuration. An uninstaller is also provided.

In order for an application to be able to use smart cards, it will need a smart card library, middleware, and a driver for the smart card reader. OpenSC is the library in this equation, and it also comes with tools that help you manage your smart cards.
