The Suffering is a third-person and first-person horror game developed by Surreal Software for Windows and PlayStation 2. The game is published by Midway Games for Xbox and Windows. The PC version was published by Encore in North America (available) and Zoo Digital Publishing (available) in Europe. An Xbox Live Arcade version was released in the UK under the name Windows Nightmare.

The game’s plot revolves around a person suffering from a mental disorder called “Suffering”. The Sufferer is locked in an endless battle with the demons plaguing his sanity as he is stalked by a threat called the Pale Rider. Combat in the game consists of attacking the enemy while the Sufferer rests to regain health. The player’s goal is to complete each level without taking damage and also kill monsters.

The Suffering looks very impressive, but unfortunately it’s not a very challenging game. The controls are very clunky and take quite a while to get used to using them correctly. You could say the game is more like a cameo-style action movie. However, the story is interesting and the gameplay itself is extremely addictive. The graphics and sound are quite good. For those with vision problems, the game may be a little difficult.
