Smart imaging is a tool designed for people who need to find the source of an image and want to be able to configure search options. Although in its early stages, the tool is already “smart” enough to handle requests beyond the basic requirements.

Once the program is installed, it will create a quick command in your system. The context menu allows right-clicking on an image and selecting the SmartImage option to start a search for the image’s source. This feature can be enabled from within the program by pressing 3 of the option (corresponding index).

Although very useful, both the command line and context menu options have some drawbacks. For example, the command line option for selecting a search engine for a lookup is less intuitive (you can select all available search engines in the desired order (by priority), or just one, unspecified). As for the context menu, it works perfectly on some Windows configurations (e.g. Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit) but seems to be incompatible with others (Windows 10 Home).

To get better results than the standard settings, you may want to configure the tool so that it searches for the source of the image where you want it, based on your preferred priorities. There are nine command line options, namely: display information, reset all configurations, add/remove context menu integration, configure search engine, configure priority engine, configure SauceNao API key, configure Imgur API key, update configuration file, Check for updates.

Most of these features are self-explanatory. Search engine configuration options allow prioritization of your sources. For SauceNao and Imgur, you can prioritize API keys. If configured, the program will use the SauceNao API instead of parsing the HTML response. Regarding the Imgur API settings, if done correctly, SmartImage should use Imgur instead of ImgOps to upload temporary images. Finally, “Update Configuration File” should update the configuration file using the provided command line arguments.

If you like open source, customizable programs, SmartImage is a tool you should try. It offers a lot of options, and the command line is efficient and well-built (intuitive enough for non-technical people to use it). Beyond that, it’s useful to be able to choose between the option of opening each result (from different search engines) individually or setting up SmartImage to open results from different searches simultaneously in separate tabs.
