We think most of us can agree that Windows 10 is the best version of Microsoft’s operating system yet, despite its various perceived, more or less subjective flaws. By extension, this also means that Windows 10’s Explorer is also the best.

To be honest, File Explorer hasn’t evolved that much in the past few years, leaving many power users wanting a more efficient way to manage their files. And, while there are a variety of excellent file managers that can help, most of them look better suited to Windows XP.

The best thing about Files, besides its modern and fairly stylish GUI, is how intuitive it is. Using the app feels more empowering and rewarding than relying on a “basic” Explorer, and it doesn’t really feel like a third-party app not developed by Microsoft.

Since we are on the topic of GUI, the application has a basic layout with a tab bar at the top of the main window, a basic menu bar below, a navigation pane with forward and back buttons, a path/address bar , search, two adjacent sections such as Locations and Drives, and the Preview/Details pane.

Files also comes with some very useful features that classic File Explorer currently lacks. Of course, the first and most important feature is that the application allows users to open new instances (tabs) from the ribbon menu. However, the main drawback of this feature is the inability to configure and manage tabs as flexibly as a web browser.

Other useful features include the ability to navigate to the parent directory on the toolbar (via the up button), the ability to add favorite locations, choose between a variety of beautiful layout models, and Personalized GUI: Dark and Light.

In the Preferences section, users can also replace frequently used locations (e.g. Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos) with other locations of their choice.

All in all, this is a very promising project that could become quite popular if the right improvements are made. For now, while the app is still in its early stages, it does feature some improvements to the basic explorer that should be enough for some users, especially those looking for a similar app that supports tabs. Users who like the idea can check out the project’s GitHub repository and even support the entire effort with bug reports and possible new good ideas.
