Knowing how much pressure is being exerted on various parts of a tectonic plate helps geologists determine when an earthquake is likely to occur, and possibly even its magnitude. Predictions are difficult, but advanced software can help them become more accurate.
SSPX is a specialized application that uses data from multiple research stations to calculate two- or three-dimensional strain tensors. Although primarily designed for use by geologists, it will prove useful in any situation where strain/strain rate calculations are required from displacement or velocity data.
Data can be loaded from GPS or discrete element model files. After importing, the available stations as well as the strain tensors are plotted in the main window. You can enable or disable various elements such as sites, labels, displacement vectors, etc. You can also enable map view, zoom in, and take advantage of several other tools to display relevant information.
The second tab displays a list of all available sites and their coordinates. Either one can be disabled to prevent them from being taken into account in the plot. Finally, the third tab provides the complete strain report in plain text that can be copied and used in your work.
