The taskbar is a typical Windows feature, just like the Dock on macOS. Whether one is better than another is debatable, but there are certainly situations where one might be superior. If you’re using Windows, the Dock may take some getting used to.

The taskbar is designed to give Mac users a new way to control applications. It closely emulates the Windows taskbar and replaces the Dock in the process. It is quite customizable and can provide advantages in many situations.

Initial setup requires granting quite a few permissions, but other than that it’s simple. When an application is active, the Dock automatically hides and is replaced by a new taskbar at the bottom of the desktop.

You’ll notice that it’s very similar to the Windows taskbar, but without the option to hide tabs. It works very similarly, allowing you to drag and drop apps to reorder, pin them, and view window thumbnails. Additionally, you can click taskbar items to minimize and unminimize windows.

Application windows now appear as separate taskbar items, making it easier to switch between them. Spaces are also supported, and you can blacklist certain apps to prevent them from appearing in the taskbar.

One thing I noticed is that you can’t drag and drop files onto the taskbar app to import and work with them, like you can with the Dock.

In terms of appearance, all you can do now is control the maximum width of taskbar items and center them. You can’t change the size or transparency of the taskbar, hide tabs, or resize icons.

Taskbar is a promising app, especially if you’ve never been a big fan of the Dock or come from Windows. It currently works very well, but in terms of functionality and customization, more functionality would be welcome.
