NoteList is a relatively simple, old-school solution, but it still offers quite a bit of functionality. It allows you to compose notes in text or RTF format, supports embedded images, and lets you organize and filter your notes in a variety of ways.

Notes can be written in either RTF or plain text, and you have some basic formatting tools at your disposal. You can create lists and tables, change text size, color and style, and alignment. Just standard options, nothing special.

More interestingly, you have the option to add embedded images to your notes. You can move them around and even edit them using some of the markup tools, but they can’t be resized, which means you can only insert relatively small images.

The app doesn’t offer any ready-made categories, so you have to create your own. Each category has a designated background and text color to make it easy to identify them in the left panel. You can then also sort and filter your notes by category.

You can also sort using many other parameters, and there’s even a simple search feature. Additional columns in the comments list can be disabled to save space, and individual comments can be made non-editable.

NoteList works well, but it won’t blow you away. The interface is well organized but slightly dated, so it can’t compete with more modern alternatives in that regard. However, in terms of features, it offers enough to be considered a Notes alternative, and while it’s not free, the price isn’t too high either.
