If you want native Windows programs available on your Windows system, then Cygwin is the way to go. Yes, you understand regarding Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), but it is not the same as WSL. Cygwin has the ability to run *nix tools on your own Windows setup. If your system is running Windows ME or Windows XP Home Edition, you will be glad to know that Cygwin works perfectly with these operating systems. I’m also a big fan of Cygwin as it’s very fast and efficient even on my old computer that boots many times a day!

However, as soon as I installed Cygwin on my latest laptop, it told me that it was incompatible with my Windows installation! So I immediately ran an online search to find out the reason and after a little research I realized that the reason for my problems was due to some nasty bugs that Microsoft had inserted into their very old version of Windows ME. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they’ve now even added some new features that weren’t even in my original plans. So as a quick fix, I downloaded another antivirus program to protect my computer from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

When this problem persisted, I returned to my parent website where I downloaded the program, only to find that all my scripts and databases were intact. So I’m guessing Microsoft either didn’t fix this or rewrote their drivers incorrectly so I couldn’t use my programs on this version of Windows. Anyway, I had to uninstall Cygwin and reinstall Windows, which was a real problem because I had no idea what to do or where to start.
