With remote work becoming more common, and online gaming and voice chat on the rise, there’s always a chance you’re using your microphone to talk to someone. And that brings with it the risk of accidentally muting your microphone.

McMurtry is a native open source app that helps you control your microphone in all apps and ensures you always know if your microphone is muted. It’s great for protecting privacy and avoiding embarrassing situations.

Once the app is running, you’ll find it in the menu bar. The icon indicates whether the microphone is muted at all times, just click on the icon to toggle the mute state.

Alternatively, you can use hotkeys. ⌃⌥⌘M By default it is on, but you can change it to anything else you like. This is especially useful if you often run applications in full screen and don’t see the menu bar.

One of the biggest problems with muting and unmuting your microphone, especially when it’s done via hotkeys, is that it’s easy to forget when your mic is on or off. Micmute makes this easier by showing a graphic on your desktop whenever you switch your mic.

Notifications can be customized. You can make them bigger or smaller, change their position on the desktop, or set them to be text-only or icon-only. You can turn off their animations, or even disable the notification itself entirely.

That’s all it is in terms of features, and it’s really all you need. This app makes it really easy to control your microphone no matter what software you use. Being a native app, it also has a very small footprint, no unnecessary bloat, and it’s completely free.
