When it comes to video editing, Mac users already have a great free option in iMovie. It’s not as sophisticated as Final Cut Pro, but is fine for simple projects. However, there are free and open source alternatives.
OpenShot Video Editor is one of them. It’s available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, and is particularly popular on the latter two platforms. It offers a lot of features for free and is very easy to use, but it’s hard to compete with iMovie on macOS, especially in terms of performance.
In terms of functionality, there is little difference between OpenShot and iMovie. They both offer all the basic tools you need to combine media, trim and slice, add transitions, animations, and effects, and export your projects to a variety of formats.

The interface is pretty much identical to other video editors available today: files, transitions, and effects in the top left, previews on the right, and a timeline at the bottom. However, it does look pretty dated overall, with buttons and other graphical elements that don’t match the macOS aesthetic.
On paper, OpenShot seems like a good choice, but there’s one big difference between this app and iMovie: processing time. iMovie runs natively on Apple Silicon and uses hardware acceleration, so encoding is incredibly fast.
On the other hand, OpenShot still runs on M1/M2 chips using Rosetta 2 emulation, and hardware acceleration is still experimental on all platforms, with Apple’s SOCs not offering any functionality yet.
For the types of projects you’ll be using this app for, iMovie will get the same job done faster. It’s a testament to the quality of Apple’s free editing software, but OpenShot is also hampered by the transition to Apple Silicon and the extra work required to optimize for these new chips.
All in all, this is definitely not a bad editor and it is certainly a good choice for Windows and Linux users, but if you are using macOS, it is always a better choice to use iMovie.
