Windows users will be familiar with the feature of previewing window contents by hovering your mouse over the taskbar icon. If you want this feature in macOS as well, the only way to achieve it is through a third-party application.
Dock Preview Dock doorand adds an alternative alt-tab functionality that includes window previews. This is an open source application that is very simple to set up and use, but it is not perfect yet.
If an app window is active and displayed in the Dock, you can hover over its Dock icon to preview its contents. The preview can be resized to suit your preferences, and you can also add a delay or customize the window buffer.
Unfortunately, the feature doesn’t work with minimized applications, and if the window partially extends beyond the screen, that part of the window will also be cut off in the preview.

The preview also doesn’t update as often as you’d expect. If the window contents change, it can also take about half a minute for the preview to update.
Another great feature of DockDoor is its alt-tab functionality. Using the Ctrl+Tab hotkey, you can cycle through active windows and switch between them, just like using Alt+Tab. The main benefit is that you can also preview the window contents while doing this, just like on Windows.
This feature works well, but again, it only works for windows that are not minimized. Also, if you have a lot of windows open, switching between them becomes more difficult because only three windows can be displayed on the screen at one time.
In theory, DockDoor is a great app, but it still needs work. The Dock preview feature has some limitations that limit its use cases, and the Alt-tab replacement needs further refinement and customizable hotkeys to avoid conflicts with browsers and other apps.
