What is new

Roblox is relentlessly innovating to build a 3D immersive platform where millions of creators create avatars, accessories and experiences that allow people around the world to connect with each other.

At SIGGRAPH, the premier conference for computer graphics and interactive techniques worldwide, we will share new technological and algorithmic breakthroughs. The work we’re sharing includes new methods to enable 3D materials that can stretch like rubber, a faster way to produce avatars with facial animation, and hair that moves in a more lifelike way. Combined, these are strong theoretical results and early prototypes to strengthen the future of immersive 3D.

More and more detailed avatars

Avatars are at the heart of personal expression on Roblox, with full facial animation, configurable bodies, layered clothing, and a consistent look across the platform. Our recent Digital Expressions Report found that 88 percent of Gen Z respondents say that expressing themselves in metaverse-like worlds like Roblox has likely helped them feel more comfortable expressing themselves in their everyday lives. To support this self-expression, we continue to advance the latest in avatar technology.

Creating a new avatar from a 3D network traditionally requires several stages of highly technical work. This is one of the challenges of 4D generation: to extend static 3D assets to be fully dynamic, interactive and combinatorial so that they can come to life in a metaverse experience. The stages involved, including caging, rigging and skinning, can take up to a week per avatar, even for professional creators. Further work is then required to ensure compatibility with the platform’s advanced clothing and facial expressions.

Age-appropriate access

We want Roblox to simulate and even go beyond what is possible in the real world. For example, when a family attends a sporting event, there is something at the stadium for everyone to do. But some of these areas may be off-limits to young people. As they get older, however, they will be able to access these areas, and we want to recreate that dynamic on Roblox.

Now creators will be able to offer experiences for those aged 17 and older that have more mature themes and storylines such as in TV shows or stand-up comedy. These experiences may contain more violence, blood or crude humor. You can read more about what is permitted here.

Safety

Experiences for people 17 and older must meet our standards of safety and civility. We wouldn’t have it any other way. This requires extensive security and moderation tools, including:

Age verification

As noted above, you can only create or use these experiences if you are verified as 17 years of age or older. This requires you to upload a selfie and a photo of your government-issued ID, an age verification method that goes beyond what many other platforms currently use. With this approach, we give greater confidence in people’s age and identity. In the future, we may add new age verification methods.

Parental control and guidance

People have many ways to choose what content is right for their family. Our parental controls, for example, give you the option to limit children’s access to certain experiences. And we’re updating our Parenting and Caring Guide to Roblox to provide safety tips for families.

Moderation and Community Standards

Everyone on Roblox is required to adhere to our Community Standards and Guidelines, and we update them to account for content suitable for people 17 and over. In addition, people can report and block individuals and experiences that violate our policies.
