After watching a video on a website, you may want to save the video file to your local disk for offline playback in the future. If the video file is stored in the browser’s cache, this tool can help you extract the video file from the cache and save it for future viewing.

It automatically scans the entire cache of Internet Explorer and Mozilla-based browsers (including Firefox) and finds all video files currently stored in it. It allows you to easily copy the cached video files to another folder to play/watch them in the future. If you have a movie player configured to play flv files, it will also allow you to play the video directly from your browser’s cache.

After the video list is displayed, you can use one of the following options, provided that the video files are stored in the cache (‘In Cache’ = Yes):

  • Play Selected File: Allows you to play the video file directly from the cache, provided you have a video player configured to play .flv files.
  • Copy selected files to: Allows you to copy the video files from the cache to another folder so that you can play them in the future.

If you have a video file that is not cached (‘I Cache’ = No), you can use the ‘Open Download URL In Browser’ (F8) option to download the video file. You can also use the “Copy Download URLs” (Ctrl+U) option to copy download URLs to the clipboard and then use them in your browser or other download software.

Please note that some websites may not allow you to download a video file this way.

Today, most websites use Flash video files (with the .flv extension) to play video material on the website. VideoCacheView does not provide a built-in video player, but if you already have a video player configured to play .flv files, VideoCacheView will be able to use it to play the video files directly from your browser’s cache.

Known issues and limitations

  • On some video websites, the video files are not always cached by the browser. When the video file is not cached, you will not be able to view it or copy it to another folder.
  • If you use a browser based on Mozilla (including Firefox), VideoCacheView will provide a link to download the video file, even if the file itself is not stored in the cache. Due to technical limitations, this feature is not available for the Internet Explorer browser.
  • For Mozilla-based browser (including Firefox), you should close the browser to view the last video files you have watched.

What’s new

  • Updated to read the changed cache structure in the new versions of Chrome.
