DFU (Device Firmware Update) is a standard mechanism provided by most microcontroller manufacturers to allow firmware updates of the device’s non-volatile memory. STMicroelectronics has developed and made freely available their DFU tool, DfuSe (DFU File Manager for USB Devices), to allow the creation and management of firmware images specifically for STM32 microcontrollers located on USB devices.

DfuSe is an intuitive graphical user interface that allows users to easily create, modify and program DFU files. DFU files can be used to update the firmware of an STM32 microcontroller-based USB device in the field, without requiring a debugger or specialized programming hardware. It supports multiple transfer modes such as bulk, interrupt and isochronous, and can transfer all data types from firmware binaries to control data.
