Uncharted Sony San Diego 1

Update: All the attention paid to John Baustita’s Twitter account today prompted him to step out and make a comment. In a follow-up message, he explained that left Sony studio in San Diego without notice Due to “personal circumstances”, and as far as he knows, the team still exists:

We now hope that the owner of the platform acknowledges the existence of the group and makes some announcements about what he is working on.

Original story: For the past few years, Sony has been recruiting for a secret studio in San Diego, alongside its visual arts services group. This team, according to job postings, was created to collaborate with their own major studio, considered by many to be Naughty Dog. In fact, with a number of former Uncharted creators recruited, it was widely assumed that the team was working on the next story for the Buccaneer brand, presumably slated for release with the next film.

This study, however, may no longer exist. Quentin Cobb, one of the first high-profile names to join the team, apparently left the studio this month. Additionally, senior game designer John Bautista shared the following ominous post:

However, all hope is not lost. Several employees still list the studio on their resumes as active roles, although they may not have updated their LinkedIn pages yet. Likewise, the studio is still recruiting for positions, such as Senior Game Programmer. Either these jobs need to be cut or the team still exists.

To be honest, we probably never know what happened here. The studio has never been officially announced, so if it has been shut down, Sony won’t comment on it either. We’ll probably have to wait and see if any plans come to fruition outside of this group.
