It is very similar to the map known as Sky Block, where the player starts in an empty world with a small platform and must overcome a series of challenges. Because FTB application tech mods were included, various custom blocks and items could be used to track challenges and player progress, and automatically issue rewards after completing each challenge.

The map was then adapted to allow multiple players to compete against each other in a race to achieve goals. This version gained a lot of popularity after a live stream on Twitch.TV featuring Direwolf20 and Mattabase, both very famous users of the mods included in the map.

Once the map was published, it became apparent that it was very difficult to distribute the map file, mods, and configuration settings to those interested in playing it. At some point, the decision was made to combine all the mods into an easily redistributable package, as well as create a launcher that would make installation easier.

The map has gone through various iterations, including the Bedrock map, known for its challenge and reward structure made from bedrock. However, most players talking about this map are actually referring to the pyramid map, known for its large basalt pyramid that includes various rooms that list a set of items that the player had to create to solve each challenge. This version was then upgraded to a more difficult version known as FTB Insanity, which required many players anywhere from 50 to even over 100 hours of playtime to complete.

Mod packs are based on mods created on the Minecraft Forge platform. They initially focused on technical theme mods such as IndustrialCraft 2, BuildCraft and RedPower 2. However, they then expanded into other genres such as magic mods such as Thaumcraft and Mystcraft.

The initial mod pack was released as a beta in November 2012. It remained in beta status for some time due to the need for mod authors to update their mods to Minecraft 1.4, where everything became server-side. This process proved to be lengthy for several mods that were the core of the package.

Other versions of mod packs have been created, including FTB Lite, which pared down the list of mods to help new users learn the ropes without getting overwhelmed. A Magic World package was also released, focusing on magical mods.
