Lazarus Delphi compatible cross-platform IDE for Free Pascal. It includes an LCL that is more or less compatible with Delphi’s VCL. Free Pascal is a GPL-licensed compiler that runs on Linux, Win32, OS/2, 68K and other platforms. Free Pascal is designed to understand and compile Delphi syntax, which is OOP.

Lazarus is the piece of the missing puzzle that will allow you to develop Delphi-like programs on all of the above platforms. For example. Let’s say you’re building a product on Windows using the standard Windows Widgets. Now you want to create a Linux version. First you decide which set of widgets you want to use. Let’s say you want to use gtk+. So you copy the code to your Linux development machine, compile it, and link it to the gtk+ front-end module. That’s it. You’ve just created a Linux version of a Windows product without any additional coding.

If the code is standard Delphi Pascal and uses standard Delphi components, then the answer is yes. If it is using a specific database, OCX or DCU, then the answer is no. These items are Windows specific and will only work on Windows. However, if you want to create a Windows product using only Free Pascal and an application, then the answer is yes. This has not yet been added to the LCL, but it should be possible in the future.

The FCL (Free Pascal Component Libraries) and LCL (which will eventually become part of the FCL) are licensed under a modified LGPL.
