Prime95 it is a small and easy-to-use free software that allows find Mersenne primes designed for overclockers. This software describes what you need to participate in GIMPS and how it works on your computer. This page is for people with Intel-compatible personal computers, although in many cases UNIX and Mac users can participate.

Getting started with GIMPS

1. Create a new user account (optional / recommended).

Logging into your account is a “container” that stores your preferences, information about your computer and work orders, and statistics about your productivity. There is no limit to the number of computers you can have in your account.

Registration is optional but recommended. An account is required to check your account information, computer health and performance statistics, and to assign computers to your user ID. You will also need an account if you joined GIMPS before November 2008 so that you can link your old PrimeNet V4.0 account and transfer your working CPU credit.

2. Download Prime95 or similar software to your computer (s).

The How It Works page provides answers to many of the questions you might have before downloading software. The software has been updated over the years, starting in 1996, and now it has been successfully used on hundreds of thousands of home, office, school and business computers. The software uses only the remaining unused processor cycles not used by other programs and has been designed to take full advantage of the latest processor features. Be sure to get permission from the owner of the computer if it’s not yours!

3. Run the program, if desired, enter your account information, if you have created it.

The program will save your account information as you enter your username and password and will start working immediately! You can see each computer added to your account on the computer’s processor details page, along with its last reported status, current assignments, and a list of results.

After adding computers to your account and completing work orders, you can:

• Customize your account settings
• Specify an optional public name used for statistical reports and checkpoints.
• Optionally join a team to combine your stats and workload
• Check the status, performance and rating of your account
• Link your personal website to statistics records
• Remotely control your computers from where you can:
• Change computer names to track
• Configuring Work Order Settings for a Specific Computer
• Check out detailed production statistics and facts
• View completed work assignments, statistics and facts.
• Be a team leader: build and manage a team!

GIMPS requires a modern PC that runs most of the time. The program runs with the lowest possible priority. You shouldn’t see any impact on the performance of your system. The program will use about 32MB of memory and about 50MB of disk space. ATTENTION! Running the program continuously will require about 40 watts of additional power, about the same as an energy-saving CFL – your electricity bills will increase slightly. The credit for this prime-list belongs not only to Patrick Laroche, who led Prime95 software, Woltman for writing software, Blosser for keeping the Primenet server running smoothly, and thousands of GIMPS volunteers who recruited millions of non-core candidates.

Otherwise, you will need to ask a question to one of the two people who wrote the program. Network and server problems should be sent to Scott Kurowski.
