The Dark Mod is a first-person stealth action game directly inspired by the Thief saga developed by Looking Glass Studios. The game was originally a ‘mod’ for Doom 3 and actually had to be installed on your computer. However, since version 2.0, The Dark Mod is a completely independent title, and in addition to being a completely free project, you don’t need to play the original game.

The game mechanics are very similar to those found in Thief saga titles. This means that each mission requires a series of objectives to be accomplished through “simple” exploration, from killing specific individuals to stealing specific artifacts. The problem is that the main character is a thief, not a warrior. This means that instead of having a huge arsenal of weapons to defeat all our enemies, we have a variety of equipment that makes our lives easier. Extinguish with smoke bombs, extinguish torches with water arrows, soften falls with moss arrows… or knock out enemies with ready-to-use blackjack. The game also has a client included in the game, with dozens of different missions available for download. Some of them are user-created. Also, before each mission, like a thief, you have to buy the elements you want to take with you on the mission.

Graphically, The Dark Mod is spectacular. The game has visuals that are very faithful to his thief saga, but the models and characters in the setting are of even higher quality. In any case, the best is excellent lighting work.

Dark Mod is one of the best first person stealth games on PC. Especially considering it’s a free title and has a lot of potential thanks to the included scenario editor.
