As soon as the anesthesia begins, the doctor inserts the gastroscope into the patient’s mouth and guides it down the throat to the esophagus. As the gastroscope passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract, the camera attached to the tube generates images visible on a monitor.

If the gastroscopy is performed while the patient is sleepy, a mild sedative is injected into a vein in the patient’s arm. The dose is sufficient to make the patient slightly drowsy, but at the same time conscious enough to listen and follow the doctor’s instructions. A patient also receives oxygen through a tube that connects to the nose.

To monitor the patient’s heart rate and oxygen levels, an oximeter is placed on the patient’s finger. The same steps mentioned above are followed while the doctor inserts the gastroscopy device into the patient’s mouth.

To detect stomach cancer, the doctor looks for lesions, abnormal growths, inflammation, blockages, or tumors that may be present in the tissues of your gastrointestinal tract. Stomach cancer usually looks like a mushroom-shaped lump or stomach lining that looks like an old leather plaster (plastic linitis).

When these symptoms are detected, the doctor will receive tissue samples and send them for a biopsy examination.

Frequency of gastroscopy

There is no standard guide on how often a person should have a gastroscopy. However, many medical experts suggest that the procedure should be done within five (5) to 10 years if people are more prone to stomach cancer. It is always best to have your condition monitored and treated by a doctor to properly manage your case, especially if symptoms of stomach cancer have been detected by gastroscopy.
