Foreign truckers have issued an ultimatum to quit their jobs or suffer massive disruption. The Foundation for All Truck Drivers strongly believes that the industry should employ at least 100% of local drivers. Over 500 members joined the Association of Military Veterans of Umkhonto we Sizwe and Unemployed Citizens to protest against the employment of foreigners in the industry.
Protesters succeeded in closing the port of Durban and closing all terminal doors leading to the site. The memorandum that was handed out demanded that South Africans be employed in relation to their foreign colleagues:
“Trucks registered abroad must be driven by foreign truckers, as is the case in other countries like Namibia. This should be implemented from December 1. Enough is enough. MKMVA’s Zibuse Cele believes the state should implement laws that favor locals and accuse foreigners of stealing jobs: “In all private businesses and government departments, we want locals to be given the highest priority. .
We have a lot of unemployed graduates and truckers in this country and they need jobs. “Store owners were also targeted during the protest. MKMVA again called for the closure of stores not owned by local residents.
