A century-old milk bottle was discovered containing handwritten letters and rare coins.

The capsule was found buried underground at Roslyn Grist Mill in New York City by a team working on the building’s renovation.

The Roslyn Landmark Society, which provides information on architectural and historic buildings, has confirmed that the bottle dates back to 1917, when it was installed during a restoration project, it reports Star of the day

Inside the bottle were two letters, one written in English and one in Italian, as well as several rare pieces.

The English letter was created by Stephen Speedling, a carpenter in the city.

Inside the milk bottle were rare coins and handwritten letters.

While the Italian note was written by Romolo Capparrello, who identified himself as the person who designed the concrete ceiling of the structure.

The letter was translated by Andrea Fedi, professor of Italian and cultural studies at Stony Brook University, who explained that Romolo wanted his pioneering work at the mill to be remembered.

“Be careful, this is a gift I am giving you,” he wrote.

“Romolo Caparrelli invented the plank style concrete ceiling and walls installed in 1916 and 1917. So call us back, the first mason Romolo Caparrelli.”

Pam Story, Romolo’s granddaughter, confirmed that she was born in Pico, Italy, and later became a resident of Roslyn.

“He worked on a restoration of the mill in 1916 when it was intended for use as a museum,” he told the Landmark Society.

“He applied a unique style of stucco to the exterior and concrete to the floors and ceiling. He also placed his initials in the stucco next to the main entrance.

“My father told me that he put a glass jar on the wall of the building with various contents.

“I am very happy that it was found and in relatively good condition.”

Once the restoration is complete, the objects will be on display for years to come.

“Finding such a piece of history is truly a treasure,” said Jennifer Lister, member of the Roslyn Landmark Society.

“We should put our little message in a bottle when we put this structure back in place.”
