Shortly after recovering from Covid-19, Zwelinzima Vavi turned to social media to praise traditional herbs. On Monday, the secretary general of the South African Federation of Trade Unions explained how traditional medicines were used to treat illnesses long before pharmacies existed.
Vavi shared a photo of him with a plant, which appears to be umhloyan, a traditional herb. His article said: "Our people have been using traditional herbs for hundreds of years long before the existence of pharmacists! I used everything, from photography to what is available in pharmacies."

Vavi added that he had tested positive for Covid-19 on April 2 and that he had been fighting the virus for almost a month. However, he and his wife were subsequently tested negative for the coronavirus, which means that the secretary general of SAFTU has fully recovered from the virus.
