While other browsers now exist mainly to track you around the internet (to better target ads), we built Arc with you in mind – to save you as much time as possible when using the internet every day. To bring order to the chaos of your online life, stuck between rows and rows of tabs. We do it in a beautiful interface that respects your privacy and was built with care.
In other words, Arc is to your old web browser what the iPhone was to mobile phones. Or as one of our members said “like moving from a PC to a Mac.” It’s from the future – and it just feels great.
Space for the different sides of you
Easily organize everything you do online – work, studies, hobbies – all in one window with Spaces and Profiles.
Your browser, your way
Find your perfect layout with split view, themes and more.
The comfort of privacy
Arc is built from the ground up to be private and secure. We do not know which pages you visit or what you search for.
Keeps Arc Safe
Your browser is a portal to the entire internet, and everything in it. So it’s incredibly important to us to make sure your browser is as airtight and secure as it can possibly be.
We’re a small (but mighty) team working to make sure you never have to worry about your data being misused, abused or sold in ways you don’t realize.
Browser engine
Building a browser from scratch is very difficult, which is why Arc is built on Chromium – the same engine that powers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. So Arc benefits from the same foundation that makes these browsers reliable and secure. But since Chromium is open source, we can extend it to further protect your privacy.
When it comes to security, Chromium is constantly updated with security fixes for new vulnerabilities, and we take it very seriously to keep up to date with the latest version of Chromium. We even have a dedicated team of lovely Chromium engineers! Our upgrade process guarantees that Arc always uses the latest version of Chromium within 48 hours of a new version or hotfix being released.
Infrastructure
Arc uses GCP Firebase for user authentication, storage for notes and easels, and cloud capabilities for certain application functions such as referral code generation. All data stored in Firebase is encrypted at rest by default.
Direct access to all production data is limited to a few select teams based on their roles. Access is logged and reviewed at regular intervals. We store as little PII as possible and routinely audit our data to ensure we are not storing anything sensitive. See the privacy policy for a list of which user data is stored.
Logging and analysis
During the use of the browser, we collect certain telemetry data related to internal actions that the browser performs and actions that cause the browser to crash. We collect this information to improve the browser and understand categories of problems experienced by members.
Our philosophy for analytics is that they should be useful to improve the product while protecting members’ privacy.
Yes, which means it supports all the Chrome extensions and websites essential to your Internet workflows. That said, we’ve removed all the unfortunate bits that Google has there to support their ad business – we’re actually sharing a list of all the features we’ve disabled here. In other words, Arc is Chromium without the junk, which makes it faster too!
Interestingly, we built Arc in a way that makes it easy to switch rendering engines in the future. This means we may offer a WebKit version one day, or even build our own rendering engine. Time will tell!
The point is: Arc is Chrome-based to make it easy to deploy and use with the applications and extensions you rely on every day. But it doesn’t violate your privacy like other Chromium-based browsers.
Yes, Arc supports 100% of the extensions that Chrome supports. In fact, you can import all your data from Chrome to Arc in less than 5 seconds when you download it.
Arc comes with uBlock Origin already installed, but the user has full control over their browser and can uninstall it if preferred. We don’t currently have a purpose-built ad blocker, but are looking to build additional member protections into Arc in the future. Since we use Chromium under the hood, any ad blocker or privacy tool available in the Chrome app store works with Arc.
Arc is coming to Windows very soon (months away, not years)! You can sign up for the waiting list here. Arc will also be the first ever Windows application to be built in Swift, which is a pretty big deal! Our goal is to make Arc the best-designed Windows application ever created, and we hope you’ll hold us to that ambition.
Linux is admittedly a long way off. But the more people who express an interest, the sooner we will prioritize it!
