Astrometry Network is an online service that provides astronomical calibration metadata for astronomical imaging files containing coordinate information. The service comes with index files that contain the information needed to interpret the images by comparing your photos to predefined sky markers.

Astrometry is a standalone application designed to act as a port to the Astrometry.net online service. The application comes with a graphical user interface, a built-in web server, and the ability to instantly download Astrometry.net index files.

To get started, simply launch the Astrometry application and the utility will automatically start the embedded web server. The Astrometry user interface is represented by two different windows: one for managing index files and one for solving FITS files.

In the Astrometry Index Manager window, you have to select the index files you want to download or delete. For convenience, Astrometry organizes them in two columns, depending on the source directory: 2MASS or Tycho-2.

Astrometry also provides quick access to the Astrometry.net documentation, which contains detailed information about index files so you can determine which files you need to use.

On the other hand, the Astrometry Solve window allows you to load locally stored FITS image files and solve them easily. You can view the progress log in the Astrometry Solver window while the utility generates a metadata load file in the same location as the source FITS image.

All in all, Astrometry provides a standalone solution to use the Astronomy.net service and engine in a user-friendly and simplified way. The application can download index files from different directories and easily solve FITS files with minimal user interaction.
