While they may seem outdated to some, crossword puzzles have transitioned to digital media very effectively. You can find them all over the web, many of them distributed for free by reputable publications. However, you still need an app that simulates the pen and paper solving experience.

Once you unlock a puzzle, everything immediately makes sense. You’ll see the crossword puzzle on the left, the question on the right, and the question for the currently selected square on top. The timer, pause and reset buttons are at the bottom.

When you click on a square, the clues across are highlighted, and you can click on it again to drill down to the clues. With the keyboard, the same thing can be done with the arrow keys. You can also hold down the Shift key to cycle through words, or press the Tab key to move to the next word.

When you launch the app, you can choose to download puzzles from certain publications, or use crossword puzzles from earlier releases. Some require a subscription to that particular publication, but some are completely free.

And if that’s not enough, you can add more sources from the app’s preferences, enabling you to download their puzzles more easily. Also, crossword puzzles saved in Across Lite format can be opened directly.
