There are plenty of free and paid apps that can handle image compression, but not all of them are designed for quick and efficient use, especially those that are primarily used for editing.

cesium is an open-source application made specifically for batch image compression that should be great for photographers, webmasters, or various other professionals. It supports JPG, PNG and WebP, with options to resize images, remove metadata and rename output files.

Fast Batch Image Compression

To get started, just drag and drop files or folders into the main window. You can also navigate to their location, but this is usually slower. Next, choose your preferred compression level for any image formats you want to work with.

When a job starts, the application iterates through each image in the list, highlighting file size reductions in the process. After the compression is complete, you can also compare the original image with the processed image.

Works with JPG, PNG and WebP

Since these are different file formats, each format compresses differently. JPEG and WebP compression is lossy, so check the quality of the output file. PNG compression is lossless, so you don’t need to worry about losing details.

If you need to use PNG but must keep the file size down at all costs, lossy PNG compression is also a good option.

When checking the “lossless” option, you’re just preventing JPG and WebP files from being compressed. You can still remove metadata, resize and rename them. PNG files will be processed normally.
