Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) – Developed by ToastyX, CRU enables the creation of custom resolutions for both AMD/ATI and NVIDIA GPUs by establishing EDID overrides directly in the registry, eliminating the need for .inf files. The tool now supports reading expansion blocks from attached displays with these GPUs, no longer requiring workarounds for NVIDIA issues.

CRU automatically inserts an empty extension block into the registry and .inf files when needed to resolve NVIDIA driver issues. This tool focuses on adding new screen resolutions, rather than scaled resolutions. While lower resolutions will be upscaled if GPU scaling is active, higher resolutions are not downscaled and will only work if the display supports them.

This program is a sophisticated, lightweight tool designed to help users create custom screen resolutions and refresh rates that go beyond what is typically available through the operating system. CRU is particularly useful for adjusting timing parameters and fine-tuning display settings to maximize both performance and visual quality.

System requirements

  • Operating System: Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 or 11.
  • Graphics Processing Unit (GPU): Requires an AMD/ATI or NVIDIA GPU with the appropriate drivers installed. The Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver is not compatible with EDID overrides.
  • Intel GPU Support: Limited support is available for some Intel GPUs and laptops with switchable graphics. Supported drivers include: For 6./7. generation (Skylake/Kaby Lake): Intel Graphics Driver for Windows [15.45]. For 4./5. generation (Haswell/Broadwell): Intel Graphics Driver for Windows [15.40]. For 4th generation (Haswell) operating on Windows 7/8.1: Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 7/8.1 [15.36].

Resolution

Standard resolutions come primarily to good CRT monitors and are also used to include lower resolutions on LCD monitors. It is important not to set the native resolution as a default resolution. For AMD/ATI graphics, only the resolutions available in the drop-down menu are supported; all other resolutions will be ignored by the driver and displayed in gray. NVIDIA graphics do not support more than 8 standard resolutions. Standard resolutions are limited to refresh rates between 60-123 Hz. For additional refresh rates, detailed resolutions should be used.

Changes in 1.5.2

Supports up to 7 extension blocks
NVIDIA can now read all extension blocks
Detailed resolutions:
Added 480p/480i/525p/525i to “Automatic CRT”
Fixed “Exact” and “Exactly reduced” for interlaced resolutions
Added “Exact CRT” timing option
Added “Vertical Total Calculator” timing option
Audio formats: added “Auro-Cx” and “MPEG-D USAC” from CTA-861.6
Colorimetry: added “sRGB” and “Default RGB” from CTA-861.6

Characteristics

Custom Resolutions: This feature allows users to establish custom resolutions and refresh rates that go beyond the default options, improving gaming performance or improving productivity in specialized software applications.

Timing parameters: The tool offers detailed control over timing parameters such as horizontal and vertical synchronization, front and back porch and pixel clock. Such customization promotes compatibility and improves the performance capabilities of displays.

Extended Display Identification Data Management: Users can edit the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), which shows the specifications of a monitor. By changing the EDID, users can overcome default limitations and access improved resolution and refresh rate settings.

Custom Profile Backup: The tool supports saving and loading custom profiles, enabling easy transitions between different display settings. This is especially useful for those who use multiple monitors or who need to change monitor layouts frequently.

Hotkey support: Hotkeys are integrated to quickly change resolutions and refresh rates, giving users the convenience of adjusting screen settings without navigating through menus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) potentially damage my screen? No, the CRU is designed to operate within the display’s specified limits. However, it is important to be careful when adjusting time parameters beyond what is recommended, as this can lead to unintended effects.Do all applications and games support the custom resolutions created with CRU?Most software and games are compatible with custom resolutions. However, there are exceptions where some may not support atypical resolutions effectively. It’s a good idea to check each program’s compatibility before implementing significant tweaks. Is it possible to return to the original display settings after using the CRU?Yes, CRU gives you the ability to return to default display settings or switch between different custom profiles, thus providing an easy way to revert to previous settings.Does the CRU accommodate multi-monitor configurations? In fact, CRU is capable of handling setups involving multiple monitors, allowing you to assign specific custom resolutions and refresh rates to each monitor separately. Is the CRU compatible with operating systems other than Windows?CRU is primarily tailored for Windows. Although it may work on alternative platforms via compatibility layers or virtualization, performance is best on Windows systems.
