Checking free disk space on macOS involves several steps, so it might not be immediately obvious when your storage is filling up, especially if you download a lot of files every day.

Disk-O is a very small and simple application that monitors your storage and displays your remaining free space in the menu bar. It is lightweight and very easy to use and configure.

Take control of your storage space

After running this application, you will always see the remaining free space in the menu bar. If you click the icon, you can see more information about the disk and its total capacity, and access preferences.

By default, the app updates every few seconds, but you can reduce this to every ten or fifteen seconds, which should be enough. Resource usage is minimal, but the two second update interval seems a bit too much.

First, the display format: you have a few options, such as showing free space with or without decimals, showing used and free space together, or used and free space as a percentage.

Secondly, the icon itself can be changed. There are a few to choose from, some that make sense and others that are more humorous than anything else, like the tortoise or the hare.

Great if you don’t know your disk space usage

Disk-O may not be for everyone, but if you find yourself regularly running out of disk space, it will give you some advanced warnings when it’s time to delete certain apps or clear out your Trash.

In particular, it can be useful if you download a lot of content every day and then need to delete it as quickly as possible. More than once I’ve found myself unable to download anything because my disk was full and macOS somehow forgot to notify me. At least now you’ll know what the problem is.
