Dark Table It is an open source and cross-platform photography workflow application that has been around for quite some time and is available for macOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Solaris, FreeBSD, and basically most operating systems except Windows.

However, the development team behind the project has recently managed to port this useful application to Windows, in the form of a Pre-Alpha snapshot. First, please note that the Windows version of the application may still be a bit rough, and if you do find bugs or other issues, please consider reporting them to the official bug tracker of the application.

Well, here are a few of the features of darktable. First, besides the plethora of image (and RAW image) processing tools and various functions, you will also notice that this app is very useful in helping you manage your photos.

In fact, it aims to achieve a smooth balance between typical RAW image converters and processors and basic (database-specific) image management tools, all to allow you to work with pictures as efficiently as possible. You can perform flexible database queries, perform image searches based on tags, ratings and color labels, as well as filter and sort your image collection.

One of the highlights of the application is that it allows you to import a wide range of image formats, such as JPG, CR2, HDR, PFM, etc. Equally important is the application’s export system, which allows you to easily create Picasa and Flick web albums, HTML-based web galleries, and export pictures to formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PPM, PFM, EXR, and more.

In general, however, darktable is known for its image processing operations modules. As mentioned before, it is able to handle most basic image processing tasks. It can help you invert, crop, or rotate a picture, adjust exposure, reconstruct color information, set white balance, correct various saturation or color-related levels, remove noise, apply lens correction, remove spots, fix chromatic aberration, and sharpen any image, just to name a few.

When it comes to image processing effects, darktable doesn’t disappoint either. It gives you the option to add watermarks and borders, add vignettes and grain to your pictures, and a variety of other interesting effects (Orton, bloom, tinting, gradient density).

You should also know that darktable allows you to preview your photo collection in a slideshow mode, which, to be honest, is not optimal on Windows. Last but not least, the application allows you to visualize various details about your photos and even edit their metadata and geo-metadata.

Considering its numerous useful features are packed into a fairly intuitive package, it’s safe to say that darktable deserves a chance to prove its worth.
