Computer design applications have come a long way, and it is now possible to build 3D representations of almost anything you can imagine.If you are already passionate about 3D modeling then Home Builder 3D is an application that can be used to build various landscapes and environments by placing 3D objects.

The good thing is that the app is packaged in a lightweight environment and doesn’t even require setup to run. This means you can put it, your projects, and object collections on a thumb drive in case you’re working on a different computer. Because the registry keys are not modified to ensure functionality, the health of the target PC remains unchanged.

Launching the app for the first time can be a bit disappointing. This is because you are facing an empty space without any visible controls. Sure enough you can navigate using the mouse and arrow keys, and even bring up menus with right-click actions, but oddly enough, the app is primarily a viewer rather than a builder, or at least the visual aspect of the program is.

The management of objects becomes a bit tedious, especially since there is a direct option to work with or even view objects. They are organized in group folders within the source directory, you need to first examine the set and decide which elements to use.

It uses OBJ files as its objects and comes with JPG previews and textures. You can include custom OBJ files in the library. The actual build operations are done outside the application. In other words, you need to populate multiple TXT files with object numbers, rotations and positions on the canvas.

Once this is done, you can run the application to see the results. You can switch between multiple layers, change floors, and toggle the visibility of other elements such as roads, fences, and skies. It’s possible to navigate the world using your mouse and arrow keys, but there’s no real option to build a solid, self-contained home plan that you can edit or view using other apps.

The bottom line is that CAD and design applications take some time to master, but produce accurate and usable results. Unfortunately, Home Builder 3D is just beginning a long road and still feels like it’s in the early stages of development. Mainly it lacks a menu to easily insert objects.
