While Microsoft has its own tools for creating bootable USB drives or ISO images for deploying Windows, the company says it will update the media creation tool when Windows 11 is officially released to the public, likely in October 2021. The so-called MediaCreationTool.bat is a bit of a haste, creating a simple batch script that can be used for the exact same purpose, but with added support for Windows 11 and older versions of Windows 10.

Only download files from legitimate sources

Batch scripts are delivered to you in a simple archive that can be executed with a double click. The script opens a console window where you can read about the utility and choose which version of Windows to deploy.

MediaCreationTool.bat provides support for Windows 10 versions 1507 to 21H2 as well as Windows 11. It’s worth noting that the download source is entirely from an official external mirror from Microsoft’s servers. In other words, if you want to know about security-related issues, don’t use third-party links. In addition, MediaCreationTool.bat also supports commercial version, which allows you to choose language, architecture (x86 or x64) and other such options.

Create an ISO image or a bootable Windows USB

After selecting the desired version of Windows, MediaCreationTool.bat displays another list for you to choose the action to perform. Using this batch script, you can create an ISO image that can then be burned to DVD and used to install Windows on any machine with an optical drive. Alternatively, you can use the script to create a bootable USB drive that can be used to deploy the OS version of your choice on any computer.

There is another option available, Set Automatically, which allows you to check for Windows upgrades without prompting. Additionally, you have the option to choose a deployment method within the MCT (Media Creation Tool). The latter option causes the script to exit immediately and start the media creation tool.

If you plan to deploy Windows 11, be aware that using MediaCreationTool.bat allows you to skip checking the media for TPM requirements on startup or dynamic updates.

MediaCreationTool.bat supports Windows 11 and various versions of Windows 10 and is a handy tool for creating bootable media for Windows deployment. It provides an open-source alternative to Microsoft’s official utility, which also supports deploying Windows 11.
