Windows gives users the option to share files and folders with other users connected to the same network, and configure access rights in the process.

These shared resources can be monitored using Windows’ built-in tools, although less technically minded users may not even be aware of these special features of their operating system. However, there are some third-party apps that are specifically designed to do this without much effort from the user. One of them is implicitly called network open file

.

See who is accessing your shared files

No installation is required, so you can launch it with just a double-click. NetworkOpenedFiles has a user-friendly layout that presents all data in a very organized manner. Its purpose is to show you who is connected to shared network resources and what exactly they are accessing.

In addition to the name of the open file, NetworkOpenedFiles displays the name of the remote user and computer, information about user permissions (read, write, create), file lock data, file ID, date first detected as a share, file owner, Timestamps and attributes. The column list can be customized exactly the way you want.

Generate reports and disconnect remote users with one click

Information provided by NetworkOpenedFiles can be copied to the clipboard or exported to a text file. Alternatively, you can generate a full HTML report to include all or part of the data.

Additionally, you can disconnect users by closing selected open files. This way, you can control access to shared resources on the spot. However, please note that if you do not change its “Shared” status, the file or folder will continue to be accessible on the network.

Computer management alternatives for checking access to shared resources

NetworkOpenedFiles is just a simpler alternative to the “Computer Management” feature in Windows (and the shared file management commands you can execute from the command prompt), just like with this built-in system feature, you can see who has open a share file, if necessary to disconnect and generate a report.

However, further improvements will really increase its value. For example, it would be nice to have the app notify the user when a new connection is detected, create a new shared file, or exclude a file or folder from a share, rather than just stop the current connection.
